Leave Something for the Archaeologists
| Edfu 2004-11-03 8:08 pm The Good Fight, ya? Well I never had much hope, but I had hoped to all hell that I was going to be wrong. The fact is, we can never underestimate the power of the increadibly stupid when herded into large groups. The irony of course is that these same people declared that they wouldn't "let the terrorists win" - they wouldn't let them control their lives and futures through fear. But that is exactly what happened, as scores of dumb ass midwesterners, in little to no danger of a terrorist attack, with cowardice in their hearts, traded in the future of the world so they could "feel safe" in their little methodist bake sales - feel safe in the loving arms of the "compassionate conservative" administration that allowed the attacks of September 11th to happen in the first place. Never let it be said again from this day forward that humans are animals. No, it cannot be true - for an animal recognizes danger when it stares it in the face - and an animal fights for its survival. An animal would never support a group leader that was weak and incompetent. No, only a human would have done that. Unfortunately, the victory of the innane, unwashed masses is going to mean a defeat for those who were willing to fight them. The young and intelligent were all very optimistic in this election, assuming the logical - that a system that was doomed to fail by its own ineptitude would collapse under the weight of its incompetence. But that's just not the way things work in this country. And now, the young, intelligent, and formerly hopeful are disallusioned, angry, and have decided to quit. Which is exactly what they expect from us They want us to think of our actions this day as futile, and choose not to vote for years And in the next decade, take our young, creative, intelligent, and passionate selves, and find great jobs that pay a LOT of money. And get really quite comfortable in our complacency, and our material comforts And stop fighting And quit raging against the wrongs committed in the name of "freedom" And buy a minivan, and a house, and give up, fit in... and ultimately vote Republican. So then the question we must all ask ourselves is: Are we going to give them what they want? Are we going to let this defeat DEFEAT US? Are we going to become jaded and angry and dispassionate, and say "what's the point?" Are we going to let them have the whole damn world? Fighting the good fight is not something that one does over the course of a year, or even two. It's what one does with the course of a life. It's what one does despite defeat. It's what one does even if they can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Don't quit. We may not have won the day, but the war goes on -forever. And we are soldiers, whether we chose to be or not. Our apathy is the greatest danger the future can know right now. Don't let them take a single soldier from the cause. Because if we do - then they've won - not the day, but the whole damn thing. Their reign won't last forever. Their time is coming to a close. The future is ours, not theirs. And we have to claim it. So pick up your feet people (not to mention your chins.) Four years from now, we're going to have a lot of damage to undo. We better start planning the clean up now.
